Today’s society can be defined in one word – busy. We’re so busy making time for our friends, partners, jobs, and passions; that we often forget about ourselves. One of my biggest challenges this year has been to find time to love on myself, and to take care of my mental and physical state, because who else will? Despite the initial awkwardness of lavishing time and affection upon myself, I’ve come to realize just how therapeutic it can be; especially for my anxiety and overthinking.
In the spirit of sharing, here are a few ideas for enjoying time with yourself and indulging in much-needed self-care.
1. Set The Mood:
There’s nothing more powerful than a well-scented candle. Light one of these babies, turn off the lights and enjoy the ambience. I love heading to YouTube, finding the jazziest playlist and letting it play in the background while I run myself a bath. Spotify and Apple Music are great alternatives, and you’re able to browse countless pre-made playlists, or simply create your own. Whether you love jazz, classical, or Beyonce (because yes, she’s a genre on her own), make sure you find the perfect playlist and candle to get you into a state of gratitude and ease.
2. Avoid The Kitchen
While cooking may be a great way to relax, getting someone else to cook a scrumptious meal is even better. When spending time with myself, I try to avoid two things – the stove and dishes. Thanks to apps like Ubereats, you’ll never have to leave your house and can get your cravings delivered straight to your door. Don’t forget dessert!
3. Pamper Yourself:
Who doesn’t love a good pamper session? When it comes to treating yourself like the queen you are, grab all the essentials: that face mask you’ve been dying to try out, a tall glass of wine, and a few yummy snacks. I love to pop my favourite bath bomb into a warm bath and enjoy the relaxing effects of a nice soak while sipping on some “vino”. When it comes to treating yourself there’s no right way, just “do you boo”.
4. Netflix And Chill?
Whether you prefer watching your favourite Netflix show or snuggling in bed with a good book, for me, this has always been a great way to end a great evening of self-care. If you haven’t already, make sure to switch your phone to “do not disturb” and place it somewhere away from you. I’ve found that answering messages and scrolling through Instagram is often counterproductive to recharging your mental and spiritual batteries.
